Overview

Education is the key to success. Due to the astounding rate of poverty in Africa, thousands of children are deprived of the basic essential of education necessary to survive in the world today. In Sierra Leone alone, the majority of the youth between the ages of 12 and 21 years-old lack the basic education to neither read nor write. Low educational rates in Africa are due to the lack of adequate learning institutions and minimal educational opportunities. Furthermore, teachers are in general hard to employ because of the extreme low pay grade offered. The decline of education in Africa is largely due in part of the emigration of some of its brightest and gifted students to more developed countries offering a brighter educational system. As a result, many African governments tend to prioritize other needs over education, such as balancing debts and military activities. According to a March 2011 report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), armed conflict is said to be the biggest threat to education in Africa.
